From 14th Jan to 23rd Jan 2015, people of my city faced shortage of fuel and situation got worse day by day. This had not only happened in my city but surrounded whole province having 144 cities with population from 5000 to 15 million with a total over 90 million inhabitants. Luckily fuel for heavy type of vehicles like buses, trucks etc was available. But fuel for cars, motor bicycles, ambulances and other type of small vehicles was hardly available on fuel stations. People had awaited for their turn in 100’s of number either sitting in the car or over the motor bicycle or having 1 litre bottle standing in the queue waiting for their turn. The TV News Channels had directly showed regular fights among the fuel seekers present at the fuel stations. It was getting difficult for the people to reach homes or offices or to drop their children’s at school and even reaching hospital at time of emergency was hell of a task. Governmental & non-governmental emergency support vehicles were near to collapse or already had collapsed. Just imagine if the situation has prevailed for next 10 to 20 more days, the people would may have turned violent and looting could start, disturbing the cities law and order.
Take another example of USA where two persons out of one was Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African-American male in Ferguson & other 45 in New-York of Black Community were killed/shot dead by local police men. At Ferguson, after several months of deliberation, a grand jury decided not to indict Officer Wilson for any criminal charges in relation to the incident. As the details of the original shooting event emerged from investigators at Ferguson, police established curfews and deployed riot squads to maintain order. Along with peaceful protests, there was looting and violent unrest in the vicinity of the original shooting.
Above mentioned two examples gave you an idea that when you won’t get justice, governments fail to deliver the services they are binding to provide to all citizens then violent unrest and looting take place and it turn into a deadly scene. Other natural calamities are also another factor. If the basic needs of humans wont get fulfilled then its natural that human being shall use negative means to grab the desire necessary for him/her or for family members
I still remember the calm protest turned extreme violent in 2006 at Lahore & Islamabad. Thousands of protesters stormed through two cities in Pakistan on Tuesday, torching Western businesses and shouting slogans in what officials call ‘‘Pakistan’s worst violence against the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) drawings.’’ At least two people were killed and 11 injured in the rampage as security forces fired into the air and used tear gas to disperse the crowd in the eastern city of Lahore. In Lahore, protesters burned down four buildings housing a hotel, two banks, a restaurant and the office of a Norwegian cell phone company. Rioters also damaged more than 200 cars, dozens of shops and a large portrait of President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, windows of a Holiday Inn, Pizza Hut and McDonalds’s were broken by demonstrators along with the torching of two movie theatres.
We normally watch these type of looting scenes and violent protests in the movies of Hollywood or other but it’s a reality that how people respond to certain issues and burned down their own cities without considering that the shop they are burning or looting belongs to their countrymen who has the same sympathies and feelings as they have.
Unfortunately, neither foreign governments nor local government authorities have understood even having vast experience about the issues which turn a calmed inhabitant of any city into a violent protester. The recent blasphemy act performed by the French magazine has turned cities not only containing muslim population but also other religious one’s into a protest zone. The countries consider it a freedom of expression where as there act not only negating the ethical laws of honoring every religion of the world but also provide lame excuse to the terrorists to commit worst acts like in Charlie Hebdo case.
In nearby future, may be after 5 to 10 years or so, Pakistan shall face shortage of water even for drinking purpose and this factor will eventually wage a deadly war with India and with in suburbs of our cities especially among the citizens. As India is denying right of water to Pakistan based on political hatred lines will heap the intensity.
Un justice, wrong policies of governments, shortage of daily life necessary items, natural calamities, hatred material/voice against anyone, deaths due to attacks on peaceful people resulting in heavy loss of life’s of certain groups and many other are the causes of violent protests turning into a deadliest one. It is important that quick justice should be provided and law enforcement agencies of any city must act in no time to stabilize the situation and caught the miscreants trying to destroy the peace.
