Water Shortage in Pakistan

The way we humans are destroying our self is way beyond our imagination. Water which is a very necessary item for us and a gift of God but we are not giving it a single value as well as destroying the earth’s atmosphere from our own hands. Carbon dioxide coming out from the chimneys of the factories (especially from the factories of USA which is contributing 35% of the pollution in the world out of 100% whole) and stopping the warm air to go out of the surface will surely result in a great tragedy for us very soon.

I was listening to the lecture of former Managing Director, WASA Multan in which he informed the public officials attending the workshop and came from 105 cities of Punjab Province of Pakistan that soon after 15 to 20 years, Pakistan shall face a heavy clean water shortage/disaster due to the numerous factors mainly contributed by us. Such as increase of population growth more then any other country so the water usage is increasing, Water Dams don’t have the capacity to store water due to the silt factor, no water dams have been constructed since many years,  Glaciers are melting rapidly, no rain or flood water storage capacity we have, and under ground water level is getting lower and lower as its now 122 ft down in Lahore. Pakistan getting water in many ways such as through rains, meting of glaciers, through rivers coming from India as per treaty and abstraction from underground resources. We are producing 3.4 million cusic water every year (from all means), using or storing only 1.8 million and wasting 1.6 million cusic especially when water fell down into sea coming through floods which is a main resource of Pakistan other then rains or rivers.

He further informed that we are wasting water every day which should be stopped. There is an organization named “Public Health” working under the authority of Govt. of Punjab, Pakistan responsible for development of water supply and sewerage system infrastructure in all cities of Punjab Province has initiated more then 3000 water supply schemes but all schemes are a failure because they are developed without proper planning, and no body cared after the development. These water supply schemes are currently non workable and billions of money have been wasted. He requested all public officials to not to allow Public Health organization to initiate any water supply scheme without their permission and they should check the plan before giving the permission as well as to use measures to stop the wastage in the cities and use underground storage ways.
